Fractional Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing Treatment
Fractional laser resurfacing is a procedure that uses laser energy microbeams to penetrate the epidermis and into the dermis. This exciting technology allows the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks, in a safe and effective manner. The procedure typically lasts 60 minutes and is done in the office using only a topical anesthetic cream. Patients report minimal to no discomfort during the procedure.
A Revolutionary, Gentle Procedure
The class of lasers in fractional laser resurfacing produces a gentle effect on the skin, inducing controlled tissue injury in the dermis and stimulating dermal remodeling and collagen production. Four to six treatments are necessary for very moderate effects. Within the nonablative, unfractionated lasers focus on textural improvements, surgical and acne scarring, acne treatment, and overall skin rejuvenation. Patients with darker skin tones are also candidates for nonablative lasers as they do not induce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that often arises with ablative laser use on darker skin.
Non-ablative procedures have the advantage of minimal to no downtime; typically the patient leaves the office with a feeling of having a slight sunburn. This resolves in 24- 48 hours. The body’s natural healing process creates new, healthy tissue to replace the areas of affected tissue, resulting in healthier, younger-looking skin. The Palomar 1540 stimulates new collagen production to plump the facial skin, minimize facial wrinkles and improve skin laxity.
The 1540 fractional laser distributes microscopic columns of energy that stimulate the production of collagen. These treatments are highly effective on facial wrinkles and skin tightening because of the collagen stimulation. The energy also targets pigment to break up cosmetically undesirable brown spots and pigmentation. Wrinkle depth and severity is minimized, and tone and texture improved. Treatment plans can be adjusted to fit everyone’s lifestyle.
Palomar fractional laser skin resurfacing requires a series of 3-5 treatments scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. Understand that the benefits of non-ablative fractional erbium laser resurfacing takes time as new collagen production does not begin until 6 weeks after the treatment and goes on for at least 6 months after the last treatment.
The Palomar 1540 Fractional Laser has a chilled tip, but there is mild discomfort when the laser is activated. Numbing cream will also be applied to ensure you are as comfortable throughout the treatment as possible. Multiple applications of the laser across the entire skin service are done and in some cases, a second pass is done. Cold packs will be applied immediately after treatment to comfort your skin. The results of a Palomar treatment are contingent upon the type of treatment being administered. Generally, within 2 to 3 weeks of the first treatment skin will look and feel smoother and have a more even-toned complexion. After 3 or more consecutive treatments, there will be further improvement in skin tone and texture with a visible decrease of redness, dark spots, fine lines, and pores. Freckles and age spots may appear darker for up to a week before they fade gradually.
Immediately following a Palomar 1540 treatment, skin feels warm, red, and swollen like a bad sunburn, which usually resolves naturally within 1 to 3 days at most. There may also be mild bruising (purpura), crusting, scabbing, darkened patches, and, in rare cases, mild blistering. These reactions gradually subside within 1 to 2 weeks after treatment, areas of the body takes a bit longer. Ice packs will be applied, and the pink or red color goes away in a few hours or overnight. More aggressive deeper non-ablative Skin Resurfacing treatments can cause pinkness and skin peeling that can last 2 or 3 days. Topical hydrocortisone cream can reduce this reaction to deeper more aggressive treatments.
Generally, the treatment takes between 15 to 50 minutes, not including numbing time. Length of treatment depends on the size of the are being treated.
