IPL Photofacial Treatment
Intense Pulsed Light or IPL Photorejuvenation treatments use light energy which is non-invasive in nature, so your skin surface remains unblemished during and after your treatment sessions.
The advanced technology behind IPL is able to treat a variety of conditions such as:
- Uneven Pigmentation
- Sun Damaged Skin
- Rosacea
- Superficial Vessels that cause redness
- Unwanted Hair

IPL works effectively on most skin pigments and most hair types and colors; it can also treat multiple symptoms during the same sessions. Even very sensitive areas of the body can be treated due to the gentle nature of the advanced technology behind the Intense Pulsed Light process.
This process revitalizes your skin and can be highly focused to resolve particular conditions without surgery or the downtime associated with such procedures. As IPL treatments are gentle by nature, you can return to daily activities immediately after a fifteen to the twenty-minute treatment session. Full sun exposure should be avoided for several weeks before and after treatment for optimal results.
Difference Between IPL and Lasers
Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This provides a much wider treatment area and means that you’ll get both faster coverage and quicker treatment. These gentle pulses of intense light also referred to as an IPL, often produce better results than lasers and cause significantly less bruising.
Treatments can last between 30 and 45 minutes depending entirely on the size of the treated area. Your treatment provider will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin.
There will be several indicators that this has occurred including an audible tone, flashing light, and most notably, a mild sensation on the skin. This sensation sometimes only amounts to a coolness from the treatment rod, but can also include a warm sensation following each pulse. Many patients describe this warming sensation as being similar to a mild “snapping.”
IPL provides photorejuvenation treatments, which are ideal for people who have pale to medium or olive-toned complexions and wish to refine the skins texture and even skin discoloration caused by sun damage, aging, acne, rosacea, damaged blood vessels, or capillaries. IPL is not suitable for darker skin types since one of the primary targets is melanin.
The Palomar IPL may not be appropriate for pregnant women or patients who have taken Accutane for the past 6 months. Persons with a history of cold sores or herpes simplex virus shouldn’t have this procedure until they are pre-treated for these conditions. Certain medications, particularly antibiotics & blood thinners, may increase the risk of side effects, so it is very important to talk to your trusted provider about your medical history.
