How does Palomar pulsed light work?

Palomar Systems use specialized hand pieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance. The Palomar RejuveLux hand pieces emit pulses of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels.

How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This provides a much wider treatment area and means that you’ll get both faster coverage and a quicker treatment. These gentle pulses of intense light, also referred to as an IPL, often produce better results than lasers and cause significantly less bruising.

What body areas can I get treated?

Any area, except directly around the eyes. The face, neck, chest, arms, back, and legs can all be treated.

What are Palomar RejuveLux treatments like?

Treatments can last between 30 and 45 minutes depending entirely on the size of the treated area. Your treatment provider will move the hand piece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin.

There will be several indicators that this has occurred including an audible tone, flashing light, and most notably, a mild sensation on the skin. This sensation sometimes only amounts to a coolness from the treatment rod, but can also include a warm sensation following each pulse. Many patients describe this warming sensation as being similar to a mild “snapping.”
